Siamese: Brief Information About All The Types of Siamese Cats

Estimated Reading Time:

The Siamese is a medium-sized cat with a long, lithe body that is graceful and elegant. The body is well-balanced and athletic, with slender legs and oval-shaped feet. The head resembles a triangle, tapering in straight lines to form a thin muzzle. The ears are large and erect.

The eyes are almond-shaped and angled towards the nose. The tail, long and gradually tapering, does not show any breaks. The main color of their short, thin, body-length coat is light, with darker, intensely colored tips. The colored tips only touch the mask area, ears, legs, and tail, which are the coldest parts of the body. A variety of colors are allowed for the coat. The eye color will be intense and vivid blue for all coat colors and all patterns.

Types of Siamese Cats

The Siamese are distinguished according to their variety (morphology) and dress color.

The varieties

There are 4 varieties of Siamese:

  English

   Thai

   The American

   The Apple Head

The official Siamese LOOF standard is American.

The Thai also called the "Siamese old type" has become a breed in its own right in the LOOF since December 2002. However, the Apple Head, a derivative of the Thai is not officially recognized.

The English Siamese is the most common types of Siamese cats. Its head, with large pointed ears, forms an equilateral triangle. Its body is slender, the tail relatively thin and pointed at the end.

Thai Siamese. It was created from the English Siamese by breeders wanting to recreate the original Siamese, that is to say, identical to the one brought back from Thailand. His head is rounder, his ears shorter. The tail is fuller, but not as much as the European cat. He is the most successful variety.

The American Siamese is the top model of types of Siamese cats! Extremely thin, even downright filiform, his ears are opulent. American breeders created it by selecting all the attributes common to Oriental cats, such as the ears of the Sphinx or the body of the Oriental. The cats of ancient Egypt largely inspired it. This is why most people believe that the Siamese comes from Egypt.

The Apple Head Siamese or "apple head" is the culmination of selection aimed at reproducing the original Siamese. It is a copy of the Royal Cat of Siam (another name for the Siamese) who lived in the Thai forests. With a round head and small ears, he is muscular and athletic. They need a lot of exercises to maintain their athletic body shape. Cat Trees and cat towers can be the right decoration for a Siamese cat. Their dress is often slightly tabby or speckled, like our European cats.

Colors

Our Siamese is all Seal Point. This color, the most common one types of Siamese cat, is the only one that man has not created. Siamese coats are composed of the color:

Seal (dark brown)

Red

Chocolate (chocolate)

Blue

Cream (cream)

Lilac (lilac, pinkish-gray)

followed by the type of dress:

Point (dark ears, tail, legs, and face)

Tortie ("tortoiseshell")

Tabby (tabby)

Seal Tabby (tabby point)

Tortie Point

The Seal Point dress is the most common

Since the end of the 19th century, many crosses have been made, and around twenty colors have been selected. For example, in the case of Point (dark ear tips, legs, tail, and face), the allele (a part of a chromosome that contains several genes) is recessive. Both parents must be Point to have Point kittens exclusively. However, when mating a Point parent with a parent of another coat, the kittens will not necessarily be Point.

The Point gene has the characteristic that it is sensitive to heat, so it is only expressed in the coldest areas of the coat, that is to say, the tail, the legs, and the face.

In addition, the light color of the Siamese is due to an albino gene. Because of this gene, the Siamese have the fundus of the retina red and not yellow when they stare at a light source.

The Siamese coat darkens with age. He acquires his final color around the age of 1 year.

Origin of the Siamese

Siamese is one of the most popular pedigree cat breeds in the UK, coming in second only to British Shorthairs in terms of numbers. The Siamese, which have been around for hundreds of years, come from what is now Thailand. Siamese was brought to Britain in the 1880s. Initially, the classic Siamese featured dark brown tips on a cream-colored body. Western breeders developed more colors by introducing other breeds of cats into the breeding program. The strabismus and hook-shaped tail of the original Siamese are considered severe faults today.

Personality

The Siamese is probably as well known for his very talkative nature as for his classic appearance. Siameses is an outgoing cats that can be pretty vocal. The Siamese likes to be the center of attention and part of the family. This cat, which does not appreciate loneliness, is not ideal for someone away all day. Two Siamese from the same litter can be a solution. Siameses are extremely intelligent and need to be entertained. Toys and cat scratchers can be offered to amuse them; they can also learn to find toys.

They also enjoy spending time in their beds and cat houses. Since they are highly intelligent, they may get bored quickly in the home. Rotating various cat furniture and cat scratchers may be the solution to their boredom.

Health

The Siamese are part of a breed with a long life expectancy: cases of cats reaching their thirties have even been reported. Several ailments are, however, associated with this breed. Certain lines may predispose to certain cancers, such as lymphoma and intestinal tumors. Siamese also seems to suffer more from chronic cough (bronchial disease) and vomiting than other breeds. In addition, some strains of Siamese will ingest inedible items (a disorder known as pica) such as wool, plastic, and other materials. The reasons remain unclear.

 Nutrition

Each cat is unique. When it comes to food, they each have their tastes and needs. Cats are still carnivores, however, and each cat must receive 41 specific and different nutrients from their diet. Furthermore, the proportion of these nutrients varies according to the cat's age, lifestyle, and general health. It is, therefore not surprising that an energetic, growing kitten needs a different balance of nutrients in its diet than an older, less active cat. Other considerations to keep in mind are on the one hand to provide them with the correct amount of food to maintain 'their ideal body condition according to the dietary guidelines, and on the other hand to meet their preferences in terms of food recipes (dry food or wet food).

Grooming

The short, shiny coat of the Siamese does not require excessive grooming, but the cat will appreciate all the attention he receives during grooming. As with most shorthaired breeds, the cat takes excellent care of the coat. As with all cats, Siamese requires protection against disease through regular vaccination and should be subject to regular parasite checks and annual veterinary checkups.
