History
The Pomeranian is the smallest member of the Spitz family in the Arctic. The Pomeranian's ancestors are descended from sled dogs in the Arctic. It is known that Pomeranian ancestors were larger and larger than they are now. It is unknown how, when, and where the Pomeranian shrank to today's petite size.
In 1761, Princess Sophie Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz took two white dogs, "Phebe" and "Mercury", on her way to England. The probable ancestor of the breed, the German Spitz, took the name "Pomeranian" after being taken to England. The first Pomeranian breed to be brought to England was 13-14 kilograms and white. These white dogs are more like the Japanese Spitz breed.
In the following years, Queen Victoria came to power and bred more than 15 breed varieties in 64 years. The Pomeranian breed was recognized by the British Kennel Club in 1870, but it still did not receive the expected attention from the public. During her trip to Italy in 1888, Queen Victoria saw a 5-kilogram dog named "Marco" from the Pomeranian breed for the first time and brought him from Italy to England. Small and light, Marco was an inspiration to Victoria. The popularity of the Pomeranian breed did not increase after this journey. In 1900, the Pomeranian breed was also recognized by the AKC. Dogs fascinated people in England and many countries in the world. He has become one of the most popular pets.
British breeders made an effort to make the breed smaller for these dogs, which gained popularity in the 1900s and 1930s. That's why breed standards began to be established. During these studies, with the diversification of the breed, Pomeranian dogs reached a wide range of colors.
