Black French Bulldog: All The Information You Need About Them

Estimated Reading Time:

Even today, the Black French Bulldog is a very popular dog with many families. He is indeed suitable for practically everyone, young or old, people with children or not. With a pleasant and cheerful temperament, the French Bulldog lights up his home with his presence.

A little history of Black French Bulldog

The history of the Black French Bulldog is the same as in other French Bulldogs.

The French Bulldog breed, as we know it today, appeared in the 19th century. But his ancestors are much older and would have appeared in the fifth century BC, in Assyria. Used for hunting and combat, he gradually spread to the west and was nicknamed both the Pugnacious of Brittany and the Molossus of Epirus.

The story of our current French Bulldog begins, for its part, in the 1850s, after the prohibition of dog fighting in Great Britain. Bull terriers, imported by English workers in France, are crossed with ratters. These crosses gradually gave birth to the French Bulldog, which fairly quickly won the favor of wealthy bourgeois Parisians, while his ancestor was nevertheless used by the butchers of La Villette or Les Halles. Several celebrities are known for their love of the French Bulldog dog breed: Joséphine Baker, Yves Saint-Laurent, and Colette. The French Bulldog has experienced a resurgence in popularity since the 2000s.

The breed was definitively recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale in 1954.

Physical characteristics

The physique of the French Bulldog is characterized above all by his small Molossian-type size and its flattened muzzle.  The male measures between 12 and 14 inches at the withers and weighs between 17.5 and 31 lb. The female measures between 11.5 and 13 inches at the withers and weighs between 15.5 and 26.5 lb.

The French Bulldog belongs to group 9 of the FCI: pleasure and companion dogs. He wears the number 101.

  • Body: it is small and compact, with a broad and muscular back, a well-sloping croup, and a cylindrical chest.
  • Head: it is of the brachycephalic type, with a flattened muzzle. Square in shape, it is wide, decorated with folds and wrinkles.
  • Ears: the ears are erect. They are tied up high.
  • Eyes: globular, they are also dark in color.
  • Tail: the tail of the French Bulldog is short and pointed.
  • Hair: the coat is short, tight, and dense.
  • Color: the French Bulldog can be fawn, white, or black. Then there are variations and mixtures (brindle, etc.).

How Is The Temperament Of Black French Bulldog?

The Black French Bulldog is known for its kind and fun nature. He is a dog who tends to clown around and likes to entertain the gallery. Happy and playful, he is also remarkably docile and will never be aggressive, whether with children, other dogs, or other pets. He is a calm and unsportsmanlike dog who prefers naps on the sofa to long outings. He is very attached to his master and dislikes solitude too muchblack-french-bulldog

Behavior with others

The Black French Bulldog is a fundamentally gentle dog, with no hint of aggression in him. He will therefore have no problem getting along with everyone. It is not a guard dog, nor a hunting dog. He won't be suspicious of strangers and won't pose any danger to other pets like cats or NACs.

 Compatibility

A French Bulldog breed dog is ideal for families with children and less active older adults. He is above all a companion and pleasure dog. If you want a sportier breed, go for another dog. The Black French Bulldog does not enjoy exercise and is not athletic. He doesn't have the ability anyway. Pushing your French Bulldog too far could have serious consequences for your dog.

Health

Its average life expectancy is between 9 and 11 years. This is very short for a small dog, which normally lives longer than a large dog. Sometimes affected by hyper types, she has been crossed a lot to accentuate her different physical characteristics. Unfortunately, this also means that the breed is affected by several problems. Like all brachycephalic dog breeds, the Black French Bulldog is often prone to respiratory problems due to his very short muzzle. He is also a dog susceptible to heat: a heat stroke can be fatal. Therefore, he must take care of his well-being when the temperatures start to rise and avoid taking it out during the hottest hours of the day.

Living Conditions

The French Bulldog is ideally suited to apartment living. He does not need to be out for long and prefers to rest with his master rather than run for hours. Even if he needs to be taken out, like all dogs, he will be happy with a relatively short walk to allow him to stretch his legs and a few hygienic outings to relieve himself. He barks little, which is rather good news to avoid neighborhood conflicts. He adapts perfectly to city life, but he can also live in a large house in the country.

Education

Don't be fooled by its small size. The Black French Bulldog is not as easy to train as one might think. Sometimes stubborn and disobedient, the French Bulldog needs a master with natural authority but never shows violence towards him. Remember this simple adage: an iron hand in a velvet glove. Start training your puppy early, when it arrives home at two months old. However, you are lucky because, despite these little quirks, the French Bulldog likes to learn. He will be keen to make you happy. Also, remember to socialize your French Bulldog puppy well by multiplying positive experiences with other dogs, animals, and people.

Food: Feed Your Black French Bulldog Well

Take the time to choose the right food for your Black French Bulldog, because the contents of his bowl will have a direct impact on his health. Not only must you choose a food (kibbles or pâtés) that meets all of your dog's nutritional needs, but you must also check that this food is of high quality and made from premium ingredients. Check the composition by reading the labels and pay particular attention to the proteins, which must be mostly of animal origin. The dog remains a carnivore, which needs meat to stay healthy. Pay attention to dog food offered in supermarkets. Of poor quality, they are rarely adapted to the needs of your doggie. Also, keep in mind that food changes over time. Puppy food is different from senior dog food or neutered dog food. Do not hesitate to use food supplements on the advice of your veterinarian. Some are excellent and allow you to target very specific problems.

If industrial food doesn't work for you, don't panic. You can cook your Black French Bulldog's meals yourself if you have the time and the budget. You have two options: the household ration and the BARF diet. By opting for the household ration, you will feed your doggie with meat and cooked vegetables. If you choose BARF, you will prepare meals for your French Bulldog with raw meat and cooked vegetables. But before embarking on such an operation, always seek the advice of your veterinarian.

Maintenance And Hygiene Of The Black French Bulldog

The maintenance of the French Bulldog is not very restrictive. His short coat only requires one or two brushings per week during normal periods and daily brushing during molting in spring and autumn. One or two baths a year are also more than enough unless your dog is filthy or smells bad. Always choose the right products (brush, shampoo) to avoid accidents. Complete this primary care with regular brushing of the teeth, trimming the claws, and cleaning of the eyes and ears, sensitive parts in the French Bulldog. Finally, do not forget to conduct a serious veterinary follow-up, with dewormers, vaccines, and anti-parasitics, as well as regular visits.

Sleep

The French Bulldog should not sleep outside. He is a dog, above all adapted to indoor life. Sleeping your puppy in your garden, even if you buy him a suitable doghouse, presents several dangers. First, the Black French Bulldog is sensitive to cold and heat. Then he could have problems with stray cats, probably as big as him. Finally, you risk having your French Bulldog stolen by leaving it outside at night. A malicious person would have no trouble stealing it from you. Make him sleep inside by choosing a basket perfectly adapted to the French Bulldog.

Games And Physical Activities For French Bulldog

Even if he is not very enduring, the black French Bulldog remains a playful and joyful dog. So he needs to have fun. However, limit the play sessions to avoid exhausting him too quickly, especially when it is hot. The French Bulldog is also unsuitable for canine activities such as agility or canicross. Instead, buy him toys, such as puzzles, brain teasers, or balls, choosing them very solid to prevent him from breaking them and then swallowing pieces. Toys are also a great way to keep your dog busy while away to keep them from getting bored.
